WHAT IS ROYAL OAK YOUTH ASSISTANCE?
Royal Oak Youth Assistance is a PREVENTION program. We believe that by strengthening families in our community, it is possible to prevent children and their families from having to become part of the large and formal court system.
It is our MISSION to reduce the incidence of delinquency, abuse and neglect through community involvement.
Royal Oak Youth Assistance VOLUNTEERS represent many diff erent aspects of our community. Business people, school personnel, service agency representatives, and concerned citizens are all members of our organization.
Our Board of Directors is made up of volunteers who live or work in the Royal Oak community. They meet on a monthly basis to advise the many committees in planning PROGRAMS for our community.
WHAT DOES ROYAL OAK YOUTH ASSISTANCE DO?
- MOBILIZES community interest, skills and forces on behalf of children and their families.
- INVOLVES local citizens in developing and improving services designed to control, treat, eliminate, and prevent delinquency, abuse and neglect.
- IDENTIFIES the social, psychological services. and environmental factors producing antisocial behavior.
- Royal Oak Youth Assistance then CREATES and FUNDS programs to assist young individuals and their families in developing the skills which will decrease the likelihood of delinquent behavior, abuse and neglect.
WHAT PROGRAMS DO ROYAL OAK YOUTH ASSISTANCE OFFER?
CAMP & SKILL BUILDING: Royal Oak Youth Assistance provides camp scholarships for residents of Royal Oak to attend summer camps or participate in local recreational programs. Through its Skill Building program, Royal Oak Youth Assistance provides funds to youth who can benefi t from a learning experience. This could include tutoring, dance, music/art lessons, sports activities, transportation, or other needs. Requests may come from parents or guardians. Any youth who resides in the city of Royal Oak and demonstrates a financial need is eligible. Call 248.546.8282 for an application or download one from our website. Applications are reviewed on a monthly basis.
MENTORS PLUS (People Listening, Understanding, and Sharing): This program provides children within the community with the opportunity to have a positive and successful relationship with a caring adult. The intent is to build a trusting relationship, which will enrich and benefi t a child’s life. We match trained adult volunteers with children in need of a special adult friend.
YOUTH RECOGNITION: Youth Recognition is an annual spring event that recognizes and honors local young people who have volunteered their time and talent to the community. Nominations come from school, private citizens, police and i re department, or anyone who has been helped by a young person. Please contact our office if you have a young person you would like to nominate for Youth Recognition.
FAMILY EDUCATION: Royal Oak Youth Assistance’s Family Education Program off ers a series of classes and workshops to help parents understand the issues facing today’s families. The classes focus on improving parent-child relationships and other issues. Programs are available to parents of young people from elementary school through high school.
COUNSELING: Counseling services at Royal Oak Youth Assistance are only a phone call away. Family counseling, information, and referrals for a variety of problems are provided by a master's-level counselor in order to oaddress the many issues that can trouble today's families. Parents, schools, police agencies and other concerned citizens may make referrals to these services. Participation in our program is voluntary and family centered. All funds spent on programs are raised and administered by our dedicated staff of volunteers. An annual BOWL-A-THON is our major fund raiser, and extra volunteers are always needed and appreciated. If you would like to bowl with us or sponsor a bowling lane, please contact our office.

We are proud of our SPONSORSHIPS. The City Commission of Royal Oak and Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools provide us with basics such as offi ce space and supplies. The Oakland County Circuit Court–Family Division (with principal funding by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners) assigns caseworkers to our Royal Oak children and families in need. |
